Dear Clear Skies supporters, one and all,
“It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” - Babe Ruth
WE DIDN’T GIVE UP, AND WE WON’T EVER!
The people of South Portland have spoken, and the City Council and Planning Board have listened!
Today we can all breath a little bit easier.
In an historic vote last night, the South Portland City Council voted 6:1 to pass the Clear Skies Ordinance and protect the health and safety of its residents by keeping tar sands out of the city forever.
Help us spread the word by sharing this post on Facebook! (We’ve already gotten more than 1,250 shares – WOW!)
A ginormous thank you to our City Councilors, as well as to each and every one of you who has supported this long process, step by step. It’s been incredibly exciting and meaningful to come together as a community around the common goal of keeping our lives as healthy and thriving as possible.
This is a huge step for South Portland, for Maine, and for our country - with ramifications extending around the watching world.
But please stay tuned because:
We expect the American Petroleum Institute to challenge the ordinance in court, since they have millions of dollars at stake, and so we will have to remain vigilant. However, if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that we know we can count on the good people of South Portland to have each other’s backs, so we’re ready!
WE’RE HAVING A PARTY!
Sunday, Aug. 3rd, 4PM at Bug Light Park
Let’s celebrate together!With great joy,
Meg and the Protect South Portland team
